Qualifying for Social Security Disability

How Do I Know If I Qualify?

To qualify for Social Security disability benefits, your physical or mental condition — or a combination of various conditions — must satisfy the definition of disability used by the Social Security Administration. That definition states that "an individual must have a severe impairment that has either lasted, or can be expected to last, for a minimum of one year."

You must have a severe disability that prevents you from engaging in what is referred to as substantial and gainful activity (SGA). In other words, if you can work and earn the SGA earnings amount, then you are not disabled. If your condition prevents you from working and earning this amount or more, then you may be considered disabled.

You are disabled under Social Security rules if:

  • You cannot do work that you did before
  • The Social Security Administration (SSA) determines that you cannot adjust to other work because of your medical condition
  • Your disability has lasted or is expected to last for at least one year or result in death

Our Experienced Legal Team Can Lead You Through The Claims Process

Having a disability claim approved can be a drawn-out and complicated process. The knowledgeable and experienced legal team at the Law Offices of Sharon J. Meyers in Kansas City, Missouri, can solidify your claim and increase the likelihood that it is approved, often more rapidly than if you went it alone.

The disability examiners and the administrative law judge (ALJ) who review your case rely in large part on medical records and doctors' reports to determine whether a condition prevents someone from working. Our firm's highly skilled staff is dedicated to keeping your claim running smoothly, in part by collecting detailed statements from your doctors that support your case.

Our attorneys and support team are experienced at reading medical records and understanding the nature of complex diseases and injuries. We know what information is important to obtain from your doctors. We can help the ALJ assigned to your claim understand these issues and help you tell your story.
