Qualifying For Social Security Disability

To qualify for Social Security Disability benefits, your physical or mental condition — or a combination of various conditions — must satisfy the definition of disability used by the Social Security Administration. That definition states that "an individual must have a severe impairment that has either lasted, or can be expected to last, for a minimum of one year."

You must have a severe disability that prevents you from engaging in what is referred to as substantial and gainful activity (SGA). In other words, if you can work and earn the SGA earnings amount, then you are not disabled. If your condition prevents you from working and earning this amount or more, then you may be considered disabled.

You are disabled under Social Security rules if:

  • You cannot do work that you did before
  • The Social Security Administration (SSA) determines that you cannot adjust to other work because of your medical condition
  • Your disability has lasted or is expected to last for at least one year or result in death
