Attorneys & Staff

Attorney Sharon J. Meyers comes from a family of successful lawyers. She received her Juris Doctorate from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law in 1981. She has been in private law practice since 1981, specializing in the area of Social Security disability law. Ms. Meyers has firsthand personal experience with disability benefits, having battled leukemia 25 years ago and relying on disability income to help get her through that fight. She is a sustaining member of the National Organization of Social Security Claimants' Representatives, the Missouri Bar and the National Lawyers Association. She also is a member of the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association, and both Kansas and Missouri Federal District Courts. She serves on the board of directors of the National Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia Association.

Betsy Spratlin Ballard received her Juris Doctorate from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law in 2005. She began working at the Law Offices of Sharon J. Meyers in November 2004 as a law clerk and became an associate following admittance to the Missouri Bar in 2005. She serves as a board member for the Young Friends of the Children's Center for the Visually Impaired, and is actively involved with the Mid-America Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Cara J. Terrell received her Juris Doctorate from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law in 2004, where she was the articles editor for the ABA Journal, The Urban Lawyer. She began working at the Law Offices of Sharon J. Meyers in January of 2004 as a law clerk and became an associate following admittance to the Missouri Bar in the fall of 2004. Ms. Terrell is a member of the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association.

Office Manager

Chrystal L. Gates joined the Law Offices of Sharon J. Meyers in the fall of 2001. Chris grew up on a farm in Northwest Iowa and moved to Kansas City with her husband and daughters in 1985. Prior to joining the Law Offices of Sharon J. Meyers, Chris spent nearly 15 years as the senior executive assistant for Division I with the National Collegiate Athletics Administration. Chris left the NCAA after that organization moved to Indianapolis in 1999.

As the office manager of the Law Offices of Sharon J. Meyers, Chris leads our team in providing the best quality of services to our clients in a respectful and efficient manner. Over the years, Chris has developed excellent relationships with administrators and clerks at the various Social Security offices in the Kansas City area, as well as at a number of different hearing offices [Offices of Disability and Adjudication Review (ODAR)].

When not working, Chris and her husband enjoy spending time with their two daughters and grandson, as well as traveling to Iowa to see their extended families.

Legal Assistants

Laura Barton graduated from the University of Missouri, Kansas City, with a bachelor's degree in the administration of justice. She also earned a master's degree in public administration from Park University.

Laura joined the Law Offices of Sharon J. Meyers after a 30-year career in government service. Her past experience has included working with all levels of government, community-based organizations, not-for-profit organizations, and private businesses. She also has years of experience with the insurance industry.

Laura completes Social Security disability initial applications for our clients and presents each new case to the Social Security Administration with the most comprehensive collection of facts possible. Due to Laura's extreme commitment to our clients, the firm enjoys a significant number of approved claims at the initial level.

In addition, Laura monitors the progress of claims as they proceed through the Social Security system, assists clients in submission of timely and accurate information to Social Security and keep clients informed as to the status of their claim for disability.

Debby Bird joined the Law Offices of Sharon J. Meyers in 2001. She has an excellent understanding of the Social Security Administration's policies, as well as the inner workings of the agency. Debby can navigate the Social Security system with the ease few have mastered.

Debby receives, reviews and submits all medical records that come to the firm. Debby reviews medical records and recognizes where a void of evidentiary information exists in a client's medical documentation.

Debby assists new and existing clients by providing feedback in regard to the current status of a client's case, advising clients on what they can expect next and providing options for clients looking for assistance.

Jennie Perry, Legal Assistant, joined us in 2009. A lifelong resident of Kansas City, Jennie received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Loyola University in Chicago Illinois in 2006. Prior to working at the Law Offices of Sharon J. Meyers, Jennie worked at an insurance company handling medical claims and coverage issues.

Jennie prepares our clients' files for hearings before administrative law judges by ordering medical records and gathering client medical treatment information. She orders all medical records necessary to prove a claim. In addition, she works with the medical professionals involved in the treatment of clients and secures the professional opinions of the treating physicians in support of a client's claim for disability. Jennie plays a vital role in the factual building of each case and makes certain that the Social Security Administration receives all of the medical evidence available to support each claim.

Her passion and dedication to our clients is evident in the care that she takes to ensure the necessary information is gathered in the most efficient way in each case. Jennie enjoys working with clients and treats everyone with kindness and respect.

Jennie enjoys spending her free time with her husband and son.
